Our Story

The Center for Scientific Outreach, or SciCentr for short, was founded in 2023 by Rowan Black while a student at Cornell University’s Biological Sciences program. Rowan has always appreciated the value of the scientific education that she received as a child, and wanted to spread the joys of science to other children and young adults who may be interested in STEM careers. At a time of private space exploration, autonomous cars, and artificial intelligence, Rowan felt that scientific learning is more important than ever in today’s society.

With technical help from her friend Eero Tuominen of Finland, the Center for Scientific Outreach began to take shape. Together they’ve built the SciCentr infrastructure, including an active online community of amateur scientists as well as parents looking to expand their children’s educational horizons. Beginning in 2024 they began to host the first SciCentr in person meetups at a local chiropractor’s office in the Jacksonville, FL area, helping make lessons even more personable and engaging.
